The publishing department of the Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences was established in 1991 to publish multilingual source editions, works requiring remarkable editorial skill that could no longer be prepared for print by the privatised PWN and the commercialised Ossolineum. This was an ambitious goal; the department partnered in this pursuit with Semper Scientific Publishers and the Neriton Press, both of which, although founded only very recently, almost immediately became renowned for their publications in the field of humanities and social sciences. The range of publications was soon broadened to include the ever more numerous scholarly monographs and journals published under the aegis of the Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences. At the turn of the century, the expanded and well-qualified staff of IH PAN Press decided to significantly broaden its activities, gradually taking over all of the Institute’s journals and publishing a large portion of the scholarly output of the Institute’s employees, including works resulting from their grant projects, and collected papers from conferences held in the Institute or organised under its auspices.

At present, IH PAN Press successively publishes volumes of thirteen historical journals, all of them listed among the highest ranking academic journal titles as per the Ministry of Science and Higher Education (the current list of journals is available here), and volumes of several publications in series, including such fundamental ones as the Polish Biographical Dictionary, the Historical Atlas of Poland, the Historical-Geographical Dictionary of the Polish Lands in the Middle Ages, Officials of the Polish State (12th–18th centuries). In recent years, we have been publishing about 30 monographs, edited volumes and collections of conference papers per annum. These publications have also been successively made available online in the RCIN database (the Digital Repository of Scientific Institutes) as open-access materials.

IH PAN Press also cooperates with other scholarly institutions and publishers (listed here).

A significant number of our publications have received prestigious awards, which is a reflection of our care for the highest scholarly and editorial standards.

Mission

With the development of historical research at the core of its mission, IH PAN Press publishes scholarly works in the field of historical sciences that meet the highest standards of original academic research and source editing and are crucially important to Poland’s national culture. Compliance with these standards is guaranteed by the selection and review procedure conducted by the Publishing Committee (see here), our care for editorial matters and for preparation of the work for print, as well as the non-commercial character of the Press – as a not-for-profit institution, we strictly observe the rules of spending public funds and do not charge any fees from authors. In our work, we apply and promote the guidelines of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE).
