Terms and Regulations
of the Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences Library

 

1. The Library is a research workplace for researchers, partners and participants in Doctoral Studies of the Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

2. The book collection in the Reading Room shall be made available to researchers from other facilities of the Polish Academy of Sciences, other universities, scientific associations, museums, libraries and archives, as well as to students, doctoral candidates and other persons conducting research.

3. Persons using the Reading Room who have not been listed in clause 1 shall be obliged to provide a photographic identity document. For such time as the person in question remains in the reading room, their identity document shall be stored in a closed location.

4. The reading room and the lending library are open on business days within the working hours of the Institute.

5. In July and August, the Reading Room is only open to researchers, doctoral candidates and partners of the Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

6. Employees of the Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences shall be entitled to borrow up to 10 volumes for up to 3 months on their account. Retired employees of the Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences shall retain their privileges. Doctoral candidates and partners of the Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences shall be entitled to borrow up to 5 volumes for up to 3 months on their account.

7. When borrowing outside the Library, the Library reserves the right, depending on the needs in the Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences, to request that books be returned immediately, before the expiration of the aforementioned time limits. Moreover, in the period of stock-taking of books, all books must be returned to the Library.

8. Books and magazines shall be lent out to researchers and doctoral candidates of the Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences on a reciprocal basis, save for items specified in clauses 13 and 14.

9. Library accounts of doctoral candidates of the Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences (as well as those of doctoral candidates of the Faculty of History of the University of Warsaw who have an account in the Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences Library) shall be settled by 15th September of each year of doctoral studies. The settlement shall be confirmed by a signature of the head of the Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences Library in the course record of the doctoral candidate and (on a reciprocal basis) by a signature of the head of the Faculty of History of the University of Warsaw Library in the course record of the doctoral candidate of the Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences who has an account in the Faculty of History of the University of Warsaw Library.

10. Readers who have been granted the status of a partner of the Institute shall be entitled to borrow items from the Library after providing a deposit in the amount of PLN 100 annually. In the case of books whose value exceeds the amount provided above, the amount of the deposit shall be determined on a case-by-case basis, allowing for the inventory value.

11. Libraries and research institutions shall also be entitled to borrow books through inter-library loans. They may borrow up to 3 volumes at a time for up to 1 month.

12. Persons who have documented their research activity and who reside in Poland shall also be entitled to borrow items, but only in extraordinary situations, upon permission by the head of the Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences Library and after providing a deposit. The deposit account shall be valid for one year. The deposit shall be returned after the obligations towards the Library have been fulfilled. The amount of deposit shall be determined on a case-by-case basis, allowing for the value of the book.

13. The reference library shall be made available to all readers on site in the Reading Room.

14. Unprocessed books, books designated as “Use on site”, books and magazines published before 1945, current magazines, manuscripts, and doctoral and post-doctoral theses may only be made available in the Reading Room.

15. In justified situations, the head of the Library may grant permission for the employee of the Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences to borrow books and magazines published before 1945.

16. The Library obtains books from research libraries outside Warsaw – both for use by departments and workshops and by individual employees of the Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Books borrowed from other libraries shall only be made available in the Reading Room.

17. The provisions above shall also apply to microfilms. Microfilms and photocopies may only be made available in the Reading Room.

18. Access to the storage rooms shall be restricted to the staff of the Library.

19. A reader who is responsible for losing a book shall be obliged to repurchase it or, should this prove impossible, to cover the cost of making a photocopy of the given book and its cover.

20. Violation of these terms and regulations shall result in suspending the rights of use or, in cases of more serious nature, removal from the list of readers.
