Kształtowanie przestrzeni miejskiej Głównego Miasta w Gdańsku do początku XV wieku [The Development of the Urban Space in Main Town Gdańsk up to the Early Fifteenth Century], Muzeum Archeologiczne w Gdańsku, Gdańsk, 2011 (Fontes commentationesque ad res gestas Gedani et Pomeraniae, vol. 3), 160 pp., with illustrations.
ISBN: 9788385824510.

Following a comprehensive analysis of 14th-century sources (especially the oldest land registers), the author reconstructs the process by which the area of Main Town Gdańsk was shaped in the first decades of its existence. The written records and archaeological sources preserve no evidence for the supposed location of a city founded under the Lübeck law and destroyed in 1308. The book demonstrates that the area of Main Town Gdańsk developed in stages. The most problematic issue was the land development and the raising of the areas located on the banks of the Motława. At the turn of the 1380s, the street line Długi Targ / Długa Street was subject to changes. The internal structure of individual quarters also evolved. The author reconstructs the original location of plots belonging to the representatives of individual crafts, as well as their replacement. An important research achievement is the detailed characterisation of the elements of urban infrastructure related to the use of the plots (street maintenance, sewage and water supply system).

Chronik der Marienkirche in Danzig. Das ‘Historische Kirchen Register’ von Eberhard Bötticher (1616). Transkription und Auswertung. Böhlau Verlag, Köln–Weimar–Wien, 2013 (Veröffentlichungen aus den Archiven Preussischer Kulturbesitz, Bd. 67), 775 pp., with illustrations.
ISBN: 9783412208684.

The subject of the edition is the Historisches Kirchen Register, a chronicle of the Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Gdańsk written in 1616 by the then chief warden Eberhard Bötticher. Based on the information available at the beginning of the 17th century (some of his sources are no longer extant), the author of the chronicle presented the history of the church from its creation in 1343 to his day. In the introductory part, the authors of the edition reconstructed the political situation in Gdańsk during the time of Eberhard Bötticher’s activity, compiled his biography and characterised the legal position and activity of the wardens of St. Mary’s Church in Gdańsk in the 14th–17th centuries.

On the basis of rich source material (inventories of property and announcements in the press), the author reconstructs the interior design and furnishings of houses in Gdańsk in the 18th century. The book presents the characteristics of the interiors and various types of rooms in the Gdańsk burghers’ houses. The author challenges the argument established in earlier historiography concerning the representative character of the vestibule: in her view, it served primarily as a passage leading to the rest of the plot and a place to store various items and carry out a variety of household chores. In addition, the study covered the rooms used for commercial purposes, i.e. kitchens, pantries, storage rooms, attics and cellars. The book also deals with the questions of yards and their functions. Ewa Barylewska-Szymańska also analysed the real estate market in Gdańsk. In the 18th century, as she argues, houses in Gdańsk not only served their owners, but parts of living quarters were also commonly rented out to tenants.

Privilegia Casimiriana. Przywileje króla Kazimierza IV Jagiellończyka dla Gdańska z okresu wojny trzynastoletniej [Privilegia Casimiriana. Privileges of King Casimir IV Jagiellon for Gdańsk from the period of the Thirteen Years’ War], Muzeum Gdańska, Gdańsk 2023 (Źródła do Dziejów Gdańska, t. 1), 319 pp., with illustrations.
ISBN 978-83-961943-8-1

The author’s subject of interest are the four privileges of King Casimir Jagiellon for Gdańsk at the beginning of the Thirteen Years’ War (1454–1457), which constituted the basis of the city’s political and economic power in the early modern period. The book presents the origins of Gdańsk obtaining privileges and the legal situation of the city on the eve of the Thirteen Years’ War. The author also took into account the role of Privilegia Casimiriana in the political life of Prussia and Gdańsk in the 15th–18th centuries and the interest in them among early modern historiographers and lawyers. During the conflicts between Gdańsk and the Polish kings, there was also a discussion between the supporters of Gdańsk’s autonomy and the supporters of state centralization. The author also took into account the issue of assessing the privileges of Casimir Jagiellon in the historiography of the 19th and 20th century. The second part of the book includes edition of documents and translation of them into Polish.
