Studia Źródłoznawcze. Commentationes [Commentationes. Studies in the Criticism of Historical Sources] is an annual published by the Tadeusz Manteuffel Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Foundation of the Tadeusz Manteuffel Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences, focused on auxiliary sciences of history and historical sources criticism, i.e. the classification of historical sources, methods of research and criticism specific to particular types of sources, and editing of historical sources. The Journal publishes texts on the history of Poland and Central and Eastern Europe, primarily in the Middle Ages and early modern times. However, the Journal is also open to researchers of the nineteenth century. Each volume presents dissertations, archival materials (including source editions), reviews and critical notes; there are also discussions, a chronicle of contemporary academic events and memoirs. A source-centred view of the traces of the past unites the various texts published and reviewed in the Journal. Detailed analyses of external and internal criticism offer comprehensive insights into individual sources and their carriers. At the same time, these carriers are regarded as integral components and reflections of broader political, social, and cultural processes.
Studia Źródłoznawcze is one of the leading historical journals in Poland, distinguished by its focus on source studies, particularly concerning the history of earlier epochs. The Journal publishes original materials that present independent research results that have not been published elsewhere. Each article is meticulously prepared, ensuring high standards in content, editing, proofreading, and typography. Publication of an academic article in Studia Źródłoznawcze is awarded 100 points (based on the list of scored journals of 5 Jan. 2024).
The Editorial Board is advised by an advisory committee of experts in the fields of sources science and auxiliary sciences of history. Approximately 30 per cent of the committee’s members are foreign researchers. The editors and the Editorial Board convene annually in a plenary session, during which a new journal volume is presented, and the Studia Źródłoznawcze Prize of Stefan Krzysztof Kuczyński is awarded.
Expert peer review is conducted according to the principle of ‘double-blind peer review’ when neither the author nor the peer reviewers know about each other. To ensure a high standard of the Journal and the specialised evaluation of the submitted texts, the editors obtain external reviews from a wide range of national and foreign researchers. In recent years, the texts submitted to the Journal have been evaluated annually by approx. 25 reviewers. Foreign reviewers make up around 15 per cent of all reviewers each year. The list of reviewers cooperating with Studia Źródłoznawcze is published annually in the volume and on the Journal’s website.
Studia Źródłoznawcze is indexed in the following databases: BazHum, Biblioteka Nauki, CEEOL, CEJSH, DOAJ, ERIH Plus.
Publication languages: Polish, English.
Scholarly disciplines assigned by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education: history, literary studies.
Points awarded for publication: 100 points (based on the list of scored journals of 5 Jan. 2024).
This is an open-access journal: until 2023 under the CC-BY-ND 3.0 licence; since 2024 under a CC-BY 4.0 licence.

In recent years, Studia Źródłoznawcze participated in the ‘Support for Scientific Journals’ programme of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education and in the 2-year Ministry project ‘Development of scientific journals’. The Studia Źródłoznawcze Prize of Stefan Krzysztof Kuczyński
A significant aspect of the activities of the Editorial Board and Advisory Committee of the Journal is the annual (since 2010) awarding of the Studia Źródłoznawcze Prize named after Stefan Krzysztof Kuczyński, a long-time employee of the Institute of History PAS and editor-in-chief of Studia Źródłoznawcze. The aim of the Prize, financed by the Tadeusz Manteuffel Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences and by the Faculty of History of the University of Warsaw, is to promote Polish research in the auxiliary sciences of history and sources studies and the editing of historical sources. The Prize is awarded for Polish monographs in sources science and auxiliary historical sciences, as well as source editions related to the period from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century. Over the past decade, it has established a strong reputation among history researchers and is widely regarded as a prestigious honour. The laureates are selected during the winter annual plenary meeting of the Journal’s Editorial Board and Advisory Committee. The competition results are published on the Journal’s website, the Institute’s website, and in individual volumes of Studia Źródłoznawcze.

In 2013–2022 (vols 51–60), the function of editorial assistant has been performed by Rafał Rutkowski.
