Studia z Dziejów Rosji i Europy Środkowo-Wschodniej [English: Studies into the History of Russia and Central-Eastern Europe] are published by the Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences. For fifty years they were published annually, since issue XLIX they have been released twice a year in a completely refashioned graphic layout. Renowned in Poland and abroad, the journal is primarily devoted to the history of Central and Eastern Europe and the USSR and Russia in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, but also presents research articles on the connections of the region to other countries, as well as studies on the history of empires.
The first editor-in-chief of the journal was Rafał Gerber, professor at the University of Warsaw and head of the Department of History of European Socialist Countries of IH PAN. The department was ultimately transformed into the Department of European History of the 19th and 20th centuries, and from 2013 it was renamed the Department for Eastern European History and for the History of Empires of the 19th and 20th centuries. The journal was subsequently edited by prof. Jan Żarnowski, prof. Piotr Łossowski and then prof. Marek Kazimierz Kamiński. Currently, the journal is edited by a team headed by prof. Andrzej Nowak, while the Editorial Board is composed of such eminent historians as Natalia Lebedeva, Kimitaka Matsuzato, Timothy Snyder, Roman Shporluk, Yaroslav Hrytsak and Darius Staliunas. The board also included the late Richard Pipes, who died in 2018.
The first issue was published in 1965 and was entitled Studia z Dziejów ZSSR i Europy Środkowej [Studies in the History of the USSR and Central and Eastern Europe]. In 1992, the journal adopted its current title.
