  1. DESCRIPTION OF FUTURE RESEARCH WORK:

The Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences invites applications for a position as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Early Modern Studies. The duties of the successful applicant will include, among others:

  • carrying out individual research plans,
  • participating in research projects conducted within the Department,
  • delivering at least two papers per year on the researched subject at meetings of the Department and/or the Institute,
  • preparing grant proposals,
  • taking part in research initiatives carried out by the Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences,
  • participating in academic conferences related to the field of specialization,
  • fulfilling the requirements set out in regulations governing higher education in Poland, in particular those related to evaluation.

 

III. REQUIREMENTS:

The applicant must hold a PhD in the humanities and have a documented record of scholarly achievements in the field of early modern history, with particular emphasis on the intellectual history of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. The candidate is expected to present a research plan/project in this area leading to the award of the postdoctoral degree (habilitation). It is desirable that the candidate have experience in conducting archival research, both in Poland and abroad. He/she should also show practical competence in applying the research methods outlined in the proposed project.

The applicant should demonstrate fluent command of Polish, a good command of English, and adequate knowledge of other languages necessary for the conduct of the planned research. The applicant should also declare his/her consent to be counted in the number of employees carrying out scientific activity during the period of employment (the so-called N number) for the purposes of the algorithm for the distribution of base subsidy for statutory activity.

 

  1. COMPETITION PROCEDURE:
  • The competition is conducted in accordance with the rules and procedures specified in the Regulations for Conducting Competitions for Scientific Positions at the Tadeusz Manteuffel Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences, which is an Annex to Resolution No. 5/7/2024 of the Scientific Council of the IH PAS of December 19, 2024 (link – only Polish version);
  • The competition is conducted by a competition committee appointed by the Director of the Institute of History of the PAS;
  • Candidates submit applications to the Institute of History of the PAS;
  • The committee reviews the submitted applications to verify their compliance with formal requirements and assesses their substantive compatibility with the requirements (first stage of the competition);
  • After the first stage, the committee establishes a list of candidates qualified for the interview (second stage of the competition); Candidates whose applications are rejected at the first stage will be informed of the reasons for rejection;
  • Conducting interviews with selected candidates; the date and format of the interview will be specified in the notification;
  • Announcement of the competition results;
  • Candidates who participated in interviews will receive information on the results of the competition and feedback on the strengths and weaknesses of their application;
  • A candidate who disagrees with the competition results and identifies significant violations of the competition regulations has the right to request the Director of the Institute to conduct a re-evaluation within 7 days from the announcement of the results;
  • All communication with candidates will be conducted via email.
  1. CANDIDATE EVALUATION CRITERIA: For the positions of assistant professor-adiunkt, institute professor, and professor, the following criteria and scoring scale (0-100) apply:
  2. Scientific achievements (publications, conference participation, involvement in grants or other research projects, scholarships, internships) – up to 50 points;
  3. Organizational experience (organization of conferences and other scientific events) – up to 10 points;
  4. Previous participation in research projects of the Institute – up to 20 points;
  5. Consistency of candidate’s qualifications and research plans with the scientific profile of the Institute as defined in its statute and its current research directions – up to 20 points.

Each committee member assigns partial scores for each criterion. The arithmetic mean of these scores is then calculated.
