The Tadeusz Manteuffel Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences Announces Its Own Recruitment Process to the Anthropos Doctoral School of the Institutes of the Polish Academy of Sciences:

General Information on the Institute’s Recruitment and the Project

The Institute of History PAS (IH PAN) is conducting its own recruitment to the Anthropos Doctoral School of the Institutes of the Polish Academy of Sciences (IPAN) within the framework of the project “Non-Ukrainians in Revolutionary Ukraine, 1917–1921: (Trans-)National Agency in the Struggle for Emancipation and Survival”, led by dr. hab. Gennadii Korolov. The project is funded by the National Science Centre (NCN) under the OPUS LAP/WEAVE initiative and is conducted in collaboration with the Department of East European History at the University of Vienna (team led by Prof. Dr. Börries Kuzmany).

The candidate for the Doctoral School must commit to the following assumptions for pursuing their education and preparing the doctoral dissertation:

  • The doctoral student will analyze the history of national and religious groups by studying their interactions with Ukrainians and other groups during the revolutionary period of 1917–1921 and will publish preliminary findings in peer-reviewed journals;
  • The doctoral student will participate in project team meetings (both online and in-person in Vienna and Warsaw), discuss research outcomes, contribute to the project database, assist in organizing academic conferences, and help maintain the project website.

This call is open to individuals who:

  • Hold a Master’s degree in the Humanities;
  • Have a good knowledge of the history of Poland, Ukraine, and Russia in the first half of the 20th century;
  • Show interest in the history of Ukraine, the First World War, the revolutionary period (1917–1921), and the subject of national minorities;
  • Have experience working with published and archival sources from the first half of the 20th century;
  • Possess excellent knowledge of Polish, Ukrainian, or Russian (depending on the selected research focus), and a very good command of English (sufficient for effective communication).

Details on Available Places, Education, and Scholarship:

  • 1 position in the discipline of History (IH PAN) within the NCN-funded project;
  • Planned start date of doctoral education: October 1, 2025;
  • Doctoral scholarship amount:
    • PLN 4,276.07 gross per month during the first two years before the mid-term evaluation;
    • PLN 5,340.90 gross per month after the mid-term evaluation
      (gross amounts from which the doctoral student’s social security contributions are deducted).

The recruitment process is conducted as an open competition in two stages. Candidates who score at least 15 points (out of a maximum of 30) during the document assessment stage will be invited for an interview.

In order to be recommended for admission by the Recruitment Committee, the candidate must obtain at least 75 points in total and be ranked within the available limit of places.
