City-Making Processes in Warsaw, 14th—21th centuries. Diversity – Similarities – Contexts

A city meant as space is a multi-faceted process with many directions and a changing dynamics. A city meant as a group of people is a parallel process of the changing activities and identifications of the space users in time. The aim of the conference is a reflection on various manifestations of existence, development and disappearance of various spaces of Warsaw through centuries, in their material and social aspects. Particular attention will be paid to the existing peripheral and central crystallization points, their emergence and impact on the acceleration of urban development, in comparison to other urban centres.
We cordially invite scholars representing various fields: historians, art and architecture historians, archaeologists, anthropologists, architects, sociologists, cultural experts and geographers.
The conference will focus on the following topics:
- The emerging and changing spaces of Warsaw, including city-shaping forms on the micro and macro level: the phenomena and processes influencing spatial and social face of urban centres;
- Space and city-shaping elements and their impact on individuals and communities, as well as the role of individuals and communities in shaping space, urban forms and the content of the city;
- The town square – a space that shapes and is shaped. Spatial and social manifestations of city-shaping processes. Similarities and differences to other towns and cities;
- New approaches in the research on city-shaping processes.
