Institute of History Tadeusz Manteuffel of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw announces a competition[1] for the position of post-doctoral researcher for the research project “The Discourse of Composite Parliaments in post-Napoleonic Europe: The Belgian and Polish Case, 1815–1848″, commissioned by the National Science Center (project no. 2022/45/B/HS3/00464) under the supervision of Dr. Piotr Kuligowski.

 

The tasks of the candidate:

  • The post-doc will be responsible chiefly for a work-package dealing with Polish parliaments, including older parliamentary traditions in the Polish lands (from before 1815) to follow their lasting legacies with up-to date methodological perspectives. The crucial role of the researcher will be thus to deeply contextualize coded hotspots within the database (mostly in Polish), in order to reveal the meaning of given utterances of members of the parliaments at the particular moments when they were expressed.
  • Detailed research tasks:
    • a study of primary sources in Polish (reports of parliamentary proceedings);
    • extensive readings of supplementary sources related to the Polish case;
    • conducting computer-assisted analyses of sources;
    • theoretical reasoning, contextualization of reports from the Polish parliaments;
    • preparing a preliminary synthesis, that is, merging the results of close reading of archival sources with the results of distant reading of digital materials;
    • constructing of coherent comparative narrative (with the rest of team, working on other cases), writing (or co-writing) research paper(s);
    • reporting progress to the PI;
    • preparing research reports transferable into articles or conference papers;
    • participation in regular virtual team meetings.

DESCRIPTION: The candidate should have:

  • Doctoral degree in history (or a related discipline); or be ahead of the defense of the PhD thesis;
  • Fluent command of English and Polish allowing the candidate for full professional communication (knowledge of other languages ​​will be an asset);
  • At least a passive understanding of the French language (in reading);
  • Expertise in the late 18th- and/or 19th-century history, preferably research specialization in conceptual or parliamentary history and historical discourse analysis;
  • Experience with data mining and computer-assisted text analysis will be an asset;
  • Ability to work in a team;
  • Experience in communicating research results and preferably in co-authoring research papers in English (publications in international journals and reputed publishing houses will be an asset)
  • Declare consent to be included in the number of employees conducting research activity during the employment period, i.e. in the number N for the purposes of the algorithm for allocating the base subsidy to statutory activity.

Employment: after signing the IH PAN – NCN grant agreement (probably from 01/05/2024) for a period of 1,5 year (18 months), full-time. Detailed terms of employment (in line with the recommendations of the National Science Center) will be specified in the employment contract for a closed period, concluded between the post-doctoral researcher and the Director of the Institute of History of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

[1] Competition will be held according to: „Terms and regulations on awarding funding for research tasks funded or co-funded under international calls launched by the National Science Centre and carried out as multilateral collaboration UNISONO”, Annex to NCN Council Resolution No 28/2022 of 2 March 2022.
