„Map for the Nation. Digital Edition of the Charter of Former Poland (Karta Dawnej Polski) by Wojciech Chrzanowski” (a project of the Ministry of Education and Science under the program „Science for the Society”), no. NdS/543210/2021/2022; funded: 800 000 PLN, 2022–2024, leader: Dr Tomasz Panecki. The project involves the development of a digital edition of the “Charter of Former Poland” elaborated by General Wojciech Chrzanowski published in Paris in 1859 at a scale of 1:300,000. The project has three objectives. First, the map image and its contents (towns, economic objects, roads, other toponyms) will be made available as a digital edition via a web application. The edition will be presented on the AtlasFontium website (https://atlasfontium.pl/). Second, as part of the source and editorial commentary, the map will be characterized as a cartographic and historical source, and the methodology for preparing the edition will be explained. The first part will be devoted to source-related aspects. It will be important to familiarize the audience with the social context in which Chrzanowski’s map was created in order to show under what conditions cartographers of the time worked and how their initiatives served society. The second part will discuss the methodology of preparing the digital edition. Thirdly, we will organize online workshops for teachers, employees of cultural heritage institutions (museums, libraries, cultural centers), members of associations involved in the popularization of knowledge about the history of the region (“small homeland”), and for employees of archives. Following employees of the Department of Historical Atlas are involved in the project: Tomasz Panecki (principal investigator), Anna Barcz, Wiesława Duży, Michal Gochna and Aniela Wrzesińska.
“What Was a Town in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania? Terminological and Source-related Problems in Research on Urbanization in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania”, no. NDICI-GEO-NEAR/2023/444-419-0005, Central funded by Project Management Agency, funded: 79 993,20 EUR (total: 85 600 EUR), 2025–2027, leader Dr Andrzej Buczyło. The main objective of the project is to contribute to the increased knowledge about urban history and urbanization in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (GDL). It will be achieved through the development of key scientific outputs, including peerreviewed articles and a synthesis article, as well as participation in international conferences and workshops.
The specific objectives are:
Increased knowledge in urban history and urbanization in the GDL:
Achieved by presenting research results at international conferences and workshops, and engaging with scholars and experts in the field. Improved scientific data:
Accomplished through the preparation and publication of scientific deliverables, including articles on various aspects of urban history in the GDL, thus enriching the available research in the field.
These objectives will support both academic collaboration and public engagement, enhancing the understanding of urban development processes in the GDL and raising awareness about this topic. The goal of the project is to solve a research problem, therefore its results are important for historians from Belarus, Lithuania, Poland and other countries specializing in the history of the Central-Eastern 14th–18th centuries, as well as for researchers from related disciplines (history of art and architecture, economics, sociology, environmental change research). The project plans to popularize knowledge, so it is also aimed at a wide range of people interested in the history of the GDL.
The direct beneficiaries of the project are historians from Belarus, Lithuania, Poland and other countries who study the history of the GDL in the 14th–18th centuries. At the same time, the implementation of the project and the popularization of its results is important for the convergence of the positions of the Belarusian, Lithuanian and Polish national historiographic schools in interpreting the history of the GDL, which will have an impact on a wide range of citizens of these countries.
